These were hard times for the little Wolfe family. Matilda had to take in wash from
the townspeople. Her days were spent scrubbing clothes on a washboard in a big tub
in the yard.
Wilbur was somewhat uncoordinated. So, when he tried to help his mother hang
up the clean clothes, he just couldn’t do it right. But Wilbur enjoyed helping and his
mother was glad that he did.
